Our Water Heritage – Past and Present
(19.5. - 23.5. 2010)

Akyaka Cahit- Belkıs Güneyman Primary School,
Gökova Adile Mermerci Gymnasium and G.A.S.-Der

This exhibition is a product of the REMEE Cooperation Project.

From January 2009 to June 2011, REMEE unites a group of seven Euro- Mediterranean project partners from France, Greece, Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. Coordinated by APARE they are working together to safeguard Water Heritage. One of the most significant project activities is a Mediterranean Education Program called "Young People: Stakeholders in Water Heritage".
In March and April we gave lectures in two local schools, the Cahit- Belkis Güneyman Primary School and the Adile Mermerci Gymnasium to student groups between 7-17 years of age. The "past" and "present" of our Water Heritage has literally been rediscovered and discussed by the students. The lectures showed where water came/ comes from, how it reached/ reaches us and what we used/ use it for in the past and the present. Also, the differences between our past and present behaviour towards water heritage have been researched and reflected in this exhibition, a nice result of a real teamwork effort.
One side of the exhibition is showing the past, the other side gives an idea of the present of our Water Heritage, the differences between the two and their reasons are exhibited in between. This design attempts to remind us that water is not a never ending resource, that it requires our consciousness and respect and that it is the basis of our lives.
This exhibition and the related efforts have not been achieved by one single individual alone but, of course, a group of people. We want to take the opportunity to thank everybody who made the education program and this exhibition possible: Mrs. Irene Cantez, Mr. Mustafa Ateş, Mr. Baha Cüneyt Büyükdağ, Mrs. Gesine Aufdermauer, our Project Archive Officer Mehmet Bildirici, our Exhibition Coordinator Thomas Schmitz, our President and Project Coordinator Bahar (Heike) Suseven, Mr. Yusuf Yavaş from the Selçuk Municipality Culture Department, Mr. Serdal Bayraktar from the Efesten Haberler Newspaper, the education personnel, students and the Director Mr. Ahmet Taner Türkmen of the Cahit- Belkıs Güneyman Primary School, the education personnel, students and the Director Mr. Avni Tanrıverdi of the Adile Mermerci Gymnasium, the Mayor of Akyaka Mr. Ahmet Çalca and the Director of the District Department of National Education Mr. Rafet Zaifoğlu.

This Exhibition is supported by the European Union in the framework of the Euromed Heritage IV Program.
